"Realm of Decay" Zine

Realm of Decay is a horror narrative zine that follows a little character through a decaying world. A poem unfolds as the character moves through and eventually is consumed by this realm of decay.

The Creative Process

This zine was created in response to the prompt “time”. While the theme could be interpreted in countless ways, I chose to explore it through a horror lens by focusing on decay. The dark, sketchy visuals and limited colour palette help create an unsettling atmosphere across the pages. â€‹â€‹â€‹Each page blends imagery and rhyme, following a small character as they move deeper into a realm that slowly consumes them. The storyline captures the essence of time and decay; it reflects the inevitability of time’s passage, highlighting that no one can escape its pull or the slow, creeping decay it brings.

This zine was illustrated digitally and composed as a printable work using Adobe InDesign. Scroll through the pages below to view the project.

What is a Zine?

A zine, short for "magazine" or "fan magazine", is a small, noncommercial, artist book that is typically meant to be a low-budget production. They can vary greatly in form, topic, and material used, even becoming a powerful medium for self-expression, depending on the artist creating them.

Format

This zine was designed to be printed on one sheet of letter paper and folded in a specific way to create a booklet. Its simple format makes it easy to produce and distribute at a low cost. This specific zine was created for a trade, and a copy of it is housed in the Sheridan Zine Library.
